My father worked in the coal mines in McDowell county and Buchanan County, Virginia in the forties, fifties and sixties. He died at 92 several years ago and man i loved listening to his stories. Much like this man he was one tough hombre. His name was John Henry Mullins. This man may have even known him.

I just subscribed to one of those news paper search engines. Nothing conveys history like the black and white account of the locals of that tine period. I was using it for geneology research on some TN ancestors and i was amazed what i found in my family tree. The 20ies were wild!...didnt know i had a great great grandfather that had been shipped off to france and an ancestor further back who served under Stonewall Jackson. Thankfully they all procreated before they died so i could live and type up this comment while im really not doing anything with my life right now 😂

In 1958, I was waked just 16 miles NW of Knoxville by the sounds of dynamite blowing up Clinton HS. In 1957, whites rioted in Clinton,TN, the county seat of Anderson Co, because of Eisenhower's forced integration. Paul Turner, pastor of the 1st Baptist Church in Clinton was beaten by whites when he escorted nine black students to the HS and subsequently resigned his pastorate due to the violence against him (he married Mom and Dad in '50). That destruction of Clinton HS due to the end of Jim Crow influenced the President to dispatch the 101st Airborne to Little Rock, Arkansas to prevent something similar. I remember the last vestiges of Jim Crow, but it must be understood that the Civil Rights Era was a time of sporadic violence of beatings, lynchings, murders by guns, and (my personal fear) castrations. East Tennessee was mild compared to other parts of the South even the other 2 sections of TN, since that section of TN stood with the Union during the war, but the tension is still there today. Any person--black or white--in this country who does NOT understand that race (racism) is an undercurrent that influences daily life in this country is foolish or an antagonist.

What a fascinating oral history interview! Mr. Sharp was my band director from 7th grade (East Side Jr. High 7-9) to 12th grade (Howard High 10-12). He invested so much time into us that we can’t help but love him. Through the band, we were able to travel and get a glimpse of college life such that we could envision college in our futures. Numerous Howard graduates went to Tennessee State and other HBCUs because of the exposure that we received from Mr. Sharp. He taught us lessons not only in music (and we had one of the BEST high school bands), but also discipline, dedication, confidence, and lifelong friendship. I am a proud TSU Aristocrat of Bands alumni, myself, and I can’t thank Mr. Sharp enough for the investment in time and care he made in my life ❤

Denying America's history is like putting a bandage on an infected wound. It will never heal. I thank this community for setting an example of Christian love.

    1) As I've always said, Black people are the most resilient folks on earth. 2) I often wonder how a people who have been mistreated for centuries stay mostly free of anger and hate. 3) It would be extremely wonderful to see this history taught in schools throughout the country, but given the current political climate, banning of black history and books, I don't hold much hope it'll happen. 4) Regardless of the distressing information found in this video, I found it very interesting, informative and enlightening. I look forward for more. Thank you!

Alright he's been talking thirty minutes and hasn't said anything that grandpa who sits on the front porch could say. The presidency is a complex job. He should be talking about foreign policy, fiduciary projects involving billion and triple dollar projects. Infrastructure needs, educational needs. He's a loud mouth putting on a show, nothing more.

I'm not sure what's going on. The gluttutal reaction of any American today would be that a black man surrounded by rural white men is a dangerous thing. But I've worked in assisted living facilities and nursing homes all my life, taking care of all races and creeds, and one of my favorite residents was a black man from Kentucky who said his town was so small, isolated and rural that he didnt realize what was going on in the rest of the country until he moved out (after joining the Army). White kids and black kids played with one another because they had to; kids need playmates. Everyone was just as poor as everyone else, wearing patched up clothes and eating cornbread with soup beans. The school was integrated because only one schoolhouse could be afforded by the community. There were even mixed "marriages." I'm sure the adults had to have some cocept of Jim Crow, so it's likely the marriages were informal. Basically, prejudice requires some degree of affluence. When your survival until next winter is potentially dependent on your neighbor, and your neighbor is of a different race than you... well, racism would be pretty stupid then.
